SPRING SONGWRITER SHOWCASE & WINE TASTING
Victorville, CA – There is a gathering place for singer-songwriters and spoken word artists at D’vine Wine & Jazz named Maggie Vee’s Songwriter Showcase. It’s designed to connect inspired performers with an audience of their peers and an enthusiastic general audience and it’s back for the Spring Edition this time, with a wine tasting that will run right up until show time.
Singer-songwriter, artist and touring musician Maggie Vee says “The value of each event is evident on several levels. It provides an environment for singer/songwriters and/or spoken word artists to perform who may not be working with a group at the time or prefer to perform solo. They have a stage in which to present material to peers that they may not be currently performing elsewhere and get feedback from the audience members during the event. It also provides an outlet for the creative spirit and preparation for future work which makes for a unique and interesting evening for the general public since you never know what’s going to happen next, both artistically and improvisationally.”
The event attracts serious performing artists, both local and out of the area in a wide range of music genres, including spoken word and performance art which gives the public a unique opportunity to glimpse into the world songwriting, as all original material is presented and sometimes discussed by the artist. At its heart the event is an artist networking event where artists come together listen to material and sometimes form future collaborations or add to their professional contact list. The independently produced and distributed Soul Pattern Project duo will host the event.
As unique as the material may be the audience is equally so, guests never know who’ll they rub elbows with watching and gleaning talent. The event also features guest performers. To qualify you must be able to perform your original piece of music or spoken word live, with a maximum of 1 accompaniment as space and time is limited. Maggie Vee’s Songwriter Showcase Spring Edition takes place Wednesday, April 22, adding a $5 five-wine tasting with a very special and entertaining guide from 5p-7p, then show time and artists from 7p-10p at D’vine Wine & Jazz www.dvinewinebar.net in Victorville, CA. Ontario will host and exhibit, Quilt Stories from the Inland Empire. This multi-layered exhibit is guest-curated by notable artist and quilter Theresa Polley-Shellcroft and will feature various quilt designs, patterns and techniques by quilters and fiber artists throughout the Inland Empire including celebrated local textile artists Theresa Polley-Shellcroft, Diane Suval, Audrey Williams, Carolyn Villars with works from the collection of Wendy Ball and The Paul Family. Not only are the artists representative of the area, but so are stories of their quilts. Visitors will be treated to personal expressions, stories, traditional techniques and contemporary themes when viewing the quilts. Exhibited quilts will range in size, color and shape along with embellishment, appliqué, style and traditional geometric and star patterns featuring broad themes including the geography and history of the inland area.Quilting at its most rudimentary level is the assemblage of a top, a middle, and a back held together with stitching or tying. Quilts have remained a staple in the American material culture from the colonial period until now. They have become a symbol of our history and heritage serving many roles and functions in our lives across generations. Like the oral tradition, they contain our personal and public stories handed down from one person to the next, generation to generation. Once considered only as a domestic art expression whose major role was comfort to the family, quilts have moved into our visual culture as expressions of beauty from scraps, to taking their place as themes in literature, as visual roles in filmic storytelling and as outlets for experimentation with a wide variety of materials. They stand as a metaphor for ‘pulling the pieces together in life.’ Each story represented in the quilt is individual and unique. Today quilts bridge the gulf of the distinction between domestic and fine art. An artist reception will be held on Friday, December 7, 2012 from 5 PM to 7:30 PM. There are two public programs associated with this exhibit, a “Quilt Workshop” led by Theresa Polley-Shellcroft which will be held on Saturday January 12, 2013 from 1 PM to 3 PM and a “Tour and Tea” which will be held Wednesday, January 23, 2013 from 2 PM to 4 PM To learn more about these programs, please contact the Museum of History and Art, Ontario at (909) 395-2510.
